MILS WINS HDT NIGHT OF 1,000 STARS AT HANCCOK COUNTY
August 12, 2010 | By: IMCA-PR
(Britt, IA) - - The stars aligned Thursday night for Jeremy Mills, in front of a jam-packed grandstand at Britt.
Mills got the lead back with six laps to go, then pulled away from Ryan Watnem in winning the IMCA Modified feature at Hancock County Speedway’s Night of 1,000 Stars special.
Along with $3,000 in first place pay, he banked a $1,000 bonus for having raced at Britt earlier in the season and another $500 in lap money.
"This is a nice annual show that I like to do well at and it finally all came together for me," said Mills. "I finished second at Super Nationals (in 1999) and that was pretty big for me but this is definitely one of my biggest wins. There were a lot of good cars in this race."
Pat Graham, Clint Hadlestadt and Jeff Feaster rounded out the top five finishers in a feature that was also part of the JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour and a qualifying event for the 2011 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot.
Mills started on the pole and led the first two circuits in the 50-lapper, which was punctuated by caution flags throughout. Rob Hughes, Jake Durbin and Ryan Ruter all took turns at the front, Hughes enjoying the longest tenure there but Durbin netting the $1,000 bonus for leading when the race was stopped at halfway.
"The stop at lap 25 made it interesting. We changed tires and adjusted our setup at the break," Mills said. "The changes we made then definitely helped us later in the race."
Durbin continued to lead until lap 39, when Ruter raced by. The two got together following a lap 44 restart that saw Ruter spin and Durbin blackflagged.
Mills, who ran in the top three or four most of the night, restarted at the front and stayed there to the checkers.
Fifty-eight Modifieds were on hand for the 16th annual Doug Studer Farms-sponsored event. Provisional starter Alex Yohn was sixth; Ron Pope, another provisional, moved up 22 spots to finish 11th and earn hard charger honors.
Damon Murty won for the 100th time in his IMCA Sunoco Stock Car career despite starting dead last in the feature field, while Brad Ratcliff was a first-time winner in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks.
Murty earned $400 for his efforts while Ratcliff pocketed $300.
